Cellulite is a term that describes lumpy or dimpled flesh. Most of the time it can be found around the thighs and buttocks, but it can be also found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms as well.
For the most part it is much more common in woman than in men. In fact, most woman develop some cellulite after puberty. This is particularity so because women's fat is is for the most part distributed in the thighs, hips and buttocks. It is also a common problem with ageing skin, as the skin ages and looses more of it's elasticity the fat cells under the skin become more visible.
The condition is caused by fibrous connective cords that tether the skin to the underlying muscle, with the fat lying between. As the fat cells grow, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough cords pull down. This characteristic of fibrous cords and, fat deposits and muscle is what gives the skin an uneven surface or dimpling.
